Commentary By Rob Pollard

"We knew it would be a tough game here, like it always is in the Champions League. In the end, we did it.

"We scored three goals away. That was the most important thing, to score goals away. Then we’ll see."

"When Pep prepared the game, he already said we have to be careful. It’s a really tough team, a tough atmosphere, a tough stadium.

"The fans are really loud and good, they push the team. We knew it would be tough."

"We never give up. We always want to keep going, keep fighting. We know what kind of quality we have in the team.

"We know we will get chances. We have to wait for our chances and score goals and we did that today. It was not our best game but we scored our goals."

Substitute Burgstaller rolled Otamendi and the centre-back pokes his leg out. Minimal contact but the ref reaches for his pocket.

City down to 10.

City just lacking the vital last pass. Our build up is good, and we're moving it brilliantly around the edge of the area, But the killer ball not there.

What a move. Sustained period of possession ends with Sterling rolling the ball across the six-yard box - but no one is there.

Superb football.

The more I see the first penalty decision, the more I think there's not much more Otamendi can do. It's blasted at him and he is trying to tick his arm in.

What a chance for us. We were in on goal, two v two, and Sterling not decisive enough. Could have shot or passed earlier. When he did give it to Silva, it was too late.

Great effort. Good passing move from City. Silva laid it off for De Bruyne, who blasts an effort from the edge of the area - saved by Fahrmann.

Fernandimho playing the hybrid role he utilised against Arsenal. When the ball goes forward, he steps into midfield, leaving three at the back. When we're pushed back, he goes into centre-half.

City came out on top against Schalke in the semi-final of our victorious European Cup Winners' Cup campaign in 1969/70, overturning a 1-0 first-leg loss in Germany with a 5-1 victory in Manchester.

Bad omen?

City have lost both two-legged contests against German clubs, UEFA Cup quarter-finals against Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1978/79 and Hamburg 30 years later.

Nastasic on Leroy Sane

“Leroy is great player and person and he is always welcome in Gelsenkirchen and this time will be no different.

“We all know how strong City are, so we have to be on our best if we want to do something.

"But at our stadium we have a great support every game and that will be to our advantage.”

City have won two of the teams' three previous fixtures, most recently a 2-0 success in Gelsenkirchen in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage thanks to goals from Benjani and Stephen Ireland. Vincent Kompany played 90 minutes for City, the only player from either side who is still with their club.

Three or four at the back?

So, that it a case of Fernandinho dropping into a centre-half position at times, like he did in the win over Arsenal?

Looks like it to me.

Leroy Sané was a Schalke player from 2005 to 2008 and from 2011 until joining City in 2016; he made 47 Bundesliga appearances between April 2014 and May 2016, scoring 11 goals.

Matija Nastasić made 34 Premier League appearances for City between September 2012 and August 2014, when he joined Schalke, initially on loan.

Sané scored Schalke's goal in a 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg in April 2015; Kevin De Bruyne was on target for Wolfsburg.

City XI

Starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Laporte, Otamendi, Fernandinho, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Silva, Bernardo, Sterling, Aguero

Subs: Muric, Danilo, Kompany, Sane, Mahrez, Zinchenko, Foden

Nastasic to in December

“I have to be honest, I didn’t expect that we would be playing City, but when I saw the draw I was really happy because I will come back to Manchester and see some old faces,” said Matija.

"When I was in City, I was really young. In the beginning it was perfect for me but at the end, not so successful.

"But I have to say I enjoyed every day I was with the Club and I am proud that I was part of Manchester City.

“All the people who worked and still work at the club were fantastic and professional.

“I am really looking forward to playing again at Etihad because I had some great memories there and I can say only good things about the Club.”

City stars who have played in Germany

Kevin De Bruyne (Werder Bremen 2012/13, Wolfsburg 2014–15)

İlkay Gündoğan (Bochum 2008, Nürnberg 2009–11, Borussia Dortmund 2011–16)

Vincent Kompany (Hamburg 2006–08)

Solitary win

Schalke's sole league victory so far in 2019 is a 2-1 defeat of Wolfsburg in their first game on 20 January, Daniel Caligiuri scoring twice.

Injury news

Kompany trained and travelled, so he could feature for the first time since the win over Liverpool.

Mendy is back in training but not fit enough to play, and Bravo remains sidelined.

Here are the official rules around VAR

Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be introduced into the UEFA Champions League from this round. The VAR will be used in order to support the referee when making decisions concerning four match-changing situations:

1.    Goals

2.    Incidents in the penalty area

3.    Red cards

4.    Mistaken identity

The VAR will inform the referee when there is evidence of a clear and obvious mistake in one of these match-changing situations. The referee can then use the review area next to the pitch to take a final decision. The VAR is also able to take into account any infringement that could have taken place in the immediate build-up to the incident (the attacking phase of play).

Decisions like offside or whether a foul was committed inside or outside the penalty area will be recommended to the referee directly by the VAR and no on-field review necessarily takes place in such cases. The on-field review process will be communicated within the stadium using either the stadium screens or the public announcement system.
