Commentary By Rob Pollard

17:56

Pep on Sterling

"He is a top player. But he is so young.

"He is incredible, sharp, fast, clever, fighting, ambitious, decisive, can play on both sides, in the middle, receive ball behind lines.

"Incredible performance - with and without the ball. But still, with young players, like Leroy to think they can still improve. Still he lose simple balls.

"Amazing assist in first minutes [at Tottenham on Monday] but then lost a lot of ball. He has to improve but his quality one against one, his pace, is incredible."

17:54

Pep on Sterling's improvement

"His head. First season, ball arrived and he was scared, he looked at who he should pass to.

"We spoke about that and is aid try to score goals, be aggressive, it doesn't Matter if you miss it.

"I think he enjoying scoring now and making assists and being important.

"He’s a winning player. He is so, so important. He is stable, focused. He can become better player, better player. He can reach whatever he wants."

17:53

Sterling

"I thought it was a great team performance, not just with the ball. We were brilliant at times today. I am grateful for the position I am in, learning and trying to get better. It is great times at the moment."

17:52

Pep

"Not just Raheem, everybody [wants to learn]. It’s a joy to be manager of them because they follow them. In training, i try to argue why we should play this way and they follow us. It’s a joy and a pleasure for the staff.

"Raheem tries. Mikel insists on many things and everyone is there to help the guys to be better. If at the end of our period here they are better than when we arrive, well played."

16:52

Excellent display. Our goal difference gets better and better. And we're not two points clear at the top of the table after 11 matches.

CLASS.

91'

Great break from the edge of our area ends with Sane taking on Hoedt on the edge of the area and putting it into the bottom corner past McCarthy.

64'

Bernardo with a brilliant slide-rule pass that would have put Sane one-on-one with the 'keeper but for a brilliant sliding tackle from Stephens.

47'
47'

Class. Deserved for Raheem. Aguero's tenacity sees him win the ball back on the byline and cross. Sterling miscues his first attempt but makes no mistake second time around.

33'

Another good move from City. Laporte and Mendy involved. But it ends with Sterling over-hitting a backheel pass to Silva and the ball goes out of play. Pep didn't look happy!

18'

Bernardo will a brilliant no-look pass to Sterling. He crosses, it flicks off Sane's head and falls to Silva who lashes it home emphatically.

Wonderful goal.

12'

Quick turn of pace from nowhere saw Sterling completely surprise Saints defenders. Brilliant. Crowd singing his name in a show of appreciation.

14:58

There'll be a minute's silence first for Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and the four others who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash at the King Power Stadium recently.

14:44

Mark Hughes

"There are always elements of any team that you can look to exploit, no matter how good they are.

"They [Manchester City] get into winning positions very quickly which we can't let happen. They are going to have a lot of possession and we need to be patient and know when to press and when we can't press."

14:43

Pep

"I am impressed with the quality Southampton have in the middle and at the front.

"They have huge talent and are so deep and so physical. It is so complicated to beat them. We must be sharp and move well and be clever. It will be a tough game."

14:38

The Late Show

Both of our PL victories over Southampton last season came courtesy of added-time winners.

Raheem Sterling scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time in the home match and Gabriel Jesus struck in the fourth minute of time added on in the final match of the season at St Mary's Stadium.

Both hugely significant moments.

14:31

Stones

Stat just flashed up on the big screen: John Stones has a 95 per cent pass completion rate so far this season.

Considering he doesn't just play square balls all the time - he actually is one of the bravest players in the PL in possession - that's a remarkable figure.

14:13

Pep

"It’s important to have clean sheets and have few chances conceded against us. It shows our stability. I have always been focused on defending. The only difference is that we do it far away from goal. When we attack well, we defend well."

14:00

Team news has dropped!

Starting XI | Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy, Fernandinho, Silva (C), Sane, Sterling, Bernardo, Aguero

Subs | Muric, Danilo, Kompany, Delph, Mahrez, Jesus, Foden

13:54

Form

We've won seven of our last eight in all competitions.

Not sure we've had the credit we deserve for the first quarter of this season. We've been absolutely brilliant.

Perhaps the Lyon game and parts of the match at Wolves the only exceptions?

Win today and the picture would look very good.

13:49

Not bad...

City have won seven of the last nine Premier League meetings with Southampton, drawing one and losing one with an aggregate scoreline of 22-9.

13:39

Pep Guardiola believes the incredible competition for places at Manchester City is helping bring the very best out of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.

The central defensive duo have been in superb form the Club this season and together have established a formidable partnership at the heart of City’s defence.

The duo are in contention to feature again in tomorrow’s Premier League clash at home to Southampton.

Looking further ahead, at the age of just 24, the City manager believes the pair represent the long-term future in terms of the Blues' central defence.

But, equally, he says the fact that fellow top-class centre-halves, skipper Vincent Kompany and Argentine international Nicolas Otamendi, are also vying for selection is helping to drive Stones and Laporte to new levels of performance and consistency.

“Yeah, that is idea – that the club has these guys for long term,” said Guardiola of Stones and Laporte.

“But still we trust a lot with Vincent and Nico and we can’t sustain a long season with just both of them (Laporte and Stones), it’s impossible as you can see with injuries. Laporte is at good level. But when you play a lot of cup games and in the Premier League and internationals then you need strong defenders.

"We are going to help them. We are going to grow John and Aymeric. And if they feel that there are two others as good as they are that is the only way. Few people are so strong to be consistent and strong

“One of the secrets of the consistency is that the players know they have to play good otherwise someone will take their place.”

13:30

Busy period

Today's game marks the second in a demanding stretch of four home encounters in 10 days for Guardiola’s side.

Having made 10 changes for last Thursday’s Carabao Cup encounter with Fulham, which itself came just 72 hours after our vital 1-0 win at Spurs, the boss is likely to ring the changes again on Sunday to keep minds and legs as fresh as possible.

With a Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk and the small matter of the Manchester derby also looming, it’s the busiest and most important segment of the season so far.

13:18

Hello!

Good afternoon, Blues. Can we get the win we need to go back to the top of the table? Let's find out. I'll be with you throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Let's do this.

10:08

Can we make it seven?

Incredibly, the last time an opposition side scored against City in the league was back on September 1 when Newcastle visited the Etihad.

Since then, City have kept six successive clean sheets in the league.

Should we record another shut-out against the Saints this afternoon, it would represent a new club record.

10:06

A few City v Saints stats...

• The teams have met on 88 occasions competitively.

• City have tallied 32 victories, with 25 draws and 31 defeats.

• The Blues are unbeaten in our last four fixtures against the Saints, winning the last three on the trot.

09:40

A word on Stones and Laporte from the boss...

“One of the secrets of the consistency is that the players know they have to play good otherwise someone will take their place.

“The best competition isn’t the opponents – it is within the team. That’s why I am so grateful to Manchester City to provide me with this squad.

“We played nine different players against Fulham than we did at Spurs and we were still so strong. We were stable.

“The players know that they have to be ready to play good to help us remain consistent.”
