Commentary By Neil Leigh

21:17

Good night from Newport

That's all from us after another highly satisfying night's work from City.

We're through to Monday's FA Cup quarter-final draw and now the focus switches to the Champions League.

Thanks for your company and be sure to join us on Wednesday for our last 16 first leg trip to Schalke.

20:02

More from Pep...

"I was impressed with the home crowd - they supported a lot. The FA Cup is special for that reason.

"They used their strong points better than us. We don't play these kind of games every week. Thatโ€™s why we are delighted today."

20:01

Pep's verdict...

"It was a really tough game.

"They scored a late goal which is typical of these kinds of games but Phil Foden scored a great goal.

"Big congratulations to him. Big compliment to the guys today."

19:38

Phil Foden's view

"We had to show professionalism and keep the ball moving and they tired in the end. We scored straight away after they scored. It was the worst conditions I have played in.

"It's a big squad and everyone wants to show the boss they can start. He rotates the squad a lot and he gives people a chance."

90'

What a finish

Foden took the ball from deep, ran at the Newport before firing home in style.

That has surely settled our nerves and settled the tie!!!

84'

Dirty work

It hasn't always been easy on the eye but City have shown another side to our character tonight against a fiercely committed Newport side.

We've had to dig deep and scrap for every ball.

75'

Phil your boots!!

Brilliant run and movement by Foden from inside the City half. He weaves past Butler on theedge of the box before his left foot shot beats Day.

Just what we needed!!

73'

Phew

Ederson has to be alert to smartly save from O'Brien's close range header after Newport fire in a free-kick.

Newport still threatening - we need a second goal.

68'

Just in time

Fernandinho produces a timely block as Newport fling the ball back into the City box.

Another reminder that we still have work to do.

60'

Stay calm and carry on

Much more confidence about the Blues now as Maherez almost turns the Newport defence inside out.

Would still feel better with a second goal though.

58'

So close

Brilliant move from the Blues ends with Danilo smacking a shot against the post.

Deserved a goal that. Much more like the City we are used to seeing this.

52'

Blood story

The Newport keeper is receiving treatment after blood appeared on his face after that goal.

Just the start we needed in this second half.

52'

Strike one

Great work by Gabriel Jesus put in Leroy on the Newport left flank and his shot is grazed by the Newport keeper Joe Day and the ball then trickles into the net. Get in!!

46'

Running man

Leroy Sane sprints 40m back into the City box to try and deny Newport as the hosts seek to press forward.

No sign of a respite from the hosts.

HT

Bench press?

With quality of the calibre of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan on the bench, Pep has plenty of options should he wish to make a change during the second half.

They key for City is to try and sharpen up our passing and rediscover that cutting edge.

HT

Split screen

In a perverse way that's the beauty of football.

Six days on from our demolition job on Chelsea a side 83 places below us in the pyramid are proving more than a handful.

HT

Half time

It's goalless after a frustrating first 45 minutes.

We've not been anywhere near our fluent best and Newport have proved a real threat from their long throw-ins.

Plenty of work still to do here.

44'

Appeal

Ferna and David Silva feed Sane in the box who blasts in a shot which appears to strike the arm of Newport's O'Brien.

Looked a very good shout for a penalty from here

39'

Ouch

Newport's Mark O'Brien fairly clatters into Gab J. The striker is felled but no booking for the challenge.

Agricultural best describes the tackle I think.

38'

Fatigue factor

This the 61st match across rugby and football that Rodney Parade has hosted this season. And the evidence of such wear and tear is there to see.

35'

Not this time

First David Silva and Mahrez get City motoring before Leroy Sane is put into space on the left only to send his shot over the bar.

Encouraging signs though.

30'

Blocked

Great work by Gab J to win the ball in the Newport box but David Silva can't whip the cross in.

Half hour gone and Newport making life really tough for us so far.

26'

Nervy moment

Another long Newport throw in causes havoc in the City box. Fortunately we are able to clear.

Could do with a goal to settle down the nerves here.

20'

Close

Another warning for City from a long Newport throw in.

The ball is knocked on by Matt and bobbles to Joss Labadie who shoots just wide.

Danger signs for City there again.

11'

Middle man

Fernandinho superbly breaks up a Newport attack and then sweeps forward before unleashing a 25-yard show which is just wide. Impressive yet again from the Brazilian.

17:29

Grounds apart

Rodney Parade couldn't be more different to the Etihad. But the locals are putting on a fine show off the field.

The visit of Pep's side is a day no-one at Newport will forget.

17:20

Numbers game

Sergio Aguero has scored eight league goals for City in 2019 - double that of any other player.

Remarkably, Aguero's tally of eight is as many league goals as Newport have managed in their league games in December, January and February combined.

17:17

Warning note...

There's no room for complacency.

City have won just one of their last six FA Cup away games against sides from a lower division (D4, L1), losing their last such game against Wigan.

A reminder, if one were needed, that we will have to fight for everything this evening.

17:11

Up for the Cup...

Some have tagged it as a proper David v Goliath (or Dai v Goliath) clash, and there is no doubting that it's a tie which has captured the imagination of the nation.

For City however the focus is all about the job in hand and ensuring we secure our place in Monday's quarter-final draw.

17:01

Half-hour warning klaxon

Just 30 minutes until kick-off and the atmosphere is building here at Rodney Parade.

Don't think Newport has seen anything like this in years...

16:58

Newport boss Michael Flynn's view...

"I know it's easy for me to say, because I'm the underdog manager, but the way football has gone now with the finances and the gulf in facilities and resources they've got, the players they've got and the manager they've got - it will be the biggest FA Cup shock ever."

16:56

Brazilian goal blend

Gabriel Jesus has been in a hot scoring streak of late, with nine goals from his last nine appearances.

The Brazilian will lead the Blues attack today and will be looking to add to that formidable tally

16:43

Against all odds

Newport will be aiming to become the first club from the fourth tier to reach the quarter-finals since Cambridge United in 1990, and only the fifth to do so overall.

16:28

More from Pep...

"It is the cup. We know what happened last season at Wigan. Anything can happen. We will take this very seriously, I am sure about that."

16:21

Waiting game...

This is only Newport's second appearance in the FA Cup fifth round - their first was a 3-2 defeat by Portsmouth in February 1949.

16:13

Southern comfort

Already one FA Cup fifth round game has been played today. Brighton beat Derby 2-1 to book their quarter-final ticket.

In today's other fifth round tie, Millwall are currently 1-0 up at Wimbledon.

16:09

Cup crackers

Fair to say the Blues have enjoyed the FA Cup so far this season.

In our two games to date against Rotherham and Burnley we've racked up 12 goals without reply.

Lethal weapons indeed...

16:08

All or nothing...

Just a reminder that there are no replays from the fifth round onwards.

Therefore if the game is all square at full time we'll go to extra time and, if necessary, penalties.

Hope you've got your extra stocks of tea, coffee or other beverage of choice in reserve!!

16:03

Absolutely Feb...

It's been a month to remember so far.

In our three games to date in February, we've won three, scored 11 and conceded just once.

Let's hope that hot streak continues this evening.

16:01

Pep on Newport...

"We are going to suffer because they are taller and stronger than us. In some areas they will be better than us.

"They have done incredibly well in this competition. What they do, they do really well. We have watched many games to see what they do."

15:54

Throwback time

In a previous life I have twice had the pleasure of visiting Rodney Parade.

I can confirm it's a proper old school venue. Atmospheric, unpretentious and a ground that wears its heart on its sleeve.

Should make for a pulsating atmosphere.

15:47

Long time no see...

This is our first-ever first FA Cup clash with Newport.

In fact, you have to go way back to October 1962 for our last meeting, a League Cup tie which City won 2-1 in Wales.

That's so long ago it's even before my time!!

15:39

Shock treatment?

Here's Newport boss Michael Flynn's take on the game...

"We're playing the Premier League champions and arguably the best Premier League team ever.

"It would be the biggest shock in the history of the FA Cup."

15:35

Action stations

It's the start of a huge eight days for the Blues with today's game followed by Wednesday's Champions League last 16 first leg tie away at Schalke before our Carabao Cup final date with Chelsea next Sunday.

A demanding schedule by anyone's standards... but we wouldn't have it any other way!!

15:32

Newport traffic alert...

15:31

Good afternoon Blues...

A very warm welcome from Rodney Parade.

It's FA Cup fifth round day - always one of the highlights of the calendar.

League Two Newport County are playing host to the Blues in what should be a cracking cup clash.

Everyone excited?

08:23
