Commentary By Dave Clayton

It's goodbye from me...

Thanks for tuning in and stay tuned to for more reaction and match highlights at midnight.

Then we go again on Sunday....

Pep reaction....

“All season we have had these problems but in this competition you will have moments and when you have chances you have to take them.

“We did really well in the first half where we were outstanding but with the problems we had in the second half, we suffered.

“For the last 15 minutes we had a situation with the new goalkeeper we have at the club and it was difficult.

“As for Ederson - I don’t know right now.”

More to come on

Pep and the City players thanks the excellent travelling support - in the end a draw is a good result and puts us on 10 points. Not enough to go through to the Round of 16 but it looks inevitable it will happen sooner than later

Bravo raced out as Atalanta attacked and caught the forward as he went past him -as last man he had to go. Some confusion as it says VAR is still considering the sending off...

Ferna booked

Fernandinho eased the Atalanta winger off the ball as he sped past and the ref shows him a yellow card - the City players were keen to point out the referee's assistant was about a yard away but gave no foul

City playing some neat stuff but just piking the wrong final pass at the moment. Atalanta have made a big improvement and looking dangerous on the break

Ederson off...

Sorry - tech issue - back now. Ederson has gone off and Claudio Bravo is on. It suggests our Brazilian keeper has a knock of some sort

I'm guessing Pep will be pleased but frustrated we've not put this game to bed already - Gabriel may be off penalty duty for a while - he got that one horribly wrong.

City go in at the break 1-0 up but it should have been at least a couple more. Gabriel's penalty was poor but he's been excellent otherwise.

You'd have to say VAR just demonstrated why it is in operation - one penalty not given, another awarded and both correctly. Atalanta somehow still in this game

Another chance!

Sterling gets into the box and plays a smart low cross into the middle but Bernardo can't get ahead of his marker who manages to shield the ball to safety

Gundogan plays a wonderful ball to De Bruyne who gets to the bye-line and pulls it back for Sterling who doesn't see a defender approaching from behind and Atalanta survive again

So near....

City catch the hosts out again with a high press and Riyad Mahrez's low cross is inches from being turned home by Sterling's outstretched boot

City must feel the shackles are well and truly off in this game after the Southampton match at the weekend - lots of space for our creative players to cause mayhem

And again...

Jesus almost creates a tap-in for Sterling as he keeps the ball in play but the home defence just about manage to scramble it clear

Bernardo threads a pass to Jesus who flicks it into the path of Sterling who slots home calmly from about eight yards - fantastic start by the Blues!

Pep not thinking about Liverpool...

"We want to qualify as quickly as we can, of course, but the focus tonight is on a team that have done so well in the past two or three seasons.

"They attack and defend in a special way and we will have to play very well to win this game, but if we don't we will try in our next group game and in the one after that.

"We cannot deny we have a lot of problems, but it is what it is. We would like to have the full squad fit but we move forward and the players we have, we trust a lot.

"I'm in my fourth year here and all the players I have I know well and trust and I am delighted to be with them.

"Has the selection tonight been with the weekend in mind? No way! I know how important that game is to the British media but the Champions League is so important for us and we are going to try and best tonight."

Attacking threat

It was 15 shots to 13 in the first meeting in City's favour, with 10 on target for the Blues and six for the Italians - 55% to 45% possession for the hosts, too, underlining Atalanta certainly gave it a good go at the Etihad

Just 30 minutes until we get underway here at the San Siro - what score are you going for? With two of Europe's most prolific attacks you'd think there must be goals in his game...(he says, guaranteeing a 0-0 draw)

Weekend woes...

Atalanta's 2-0 home defeat to Cagliari proved costly - they dropped to fifth in Serie A while title rivals Roma, Inter and Juventus all won. They are now eight points behind leaders Juve and have bot scored more and conceded more than any other top 10 side. There were just over 18,000 at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia for that game, but Atalanta have to play their UEFA Champions League Group Stage games at Milan's San Siro...

Tommy on the bench...

Good to see Tommy Doyle experiencing a Champions League night from the bench - will he get on? It may depend on how the game goes...

So, what do we know about tonight's opponents? Well, they know how to score with 30 goals from just 11 Serie A matches this season - good going in a traditionally defensive league...

Team news

We'll have tonight's line up heading your way at 6.45pm as the Blues go looking for the win that will guarantee a Round of 16 place...

Sergio Aguero on the Champions League 💬

“So far, it’s the one thing I haven’t won with City.

“We’ll keep up the fight. All of these years have been a learning experience and we intend to continue that this season.

“City hadn’t been able to participate in Europe it for quite some time, and now we are able to be a challenge every season.

“Each campaign, we acquire more experience. Of course, I’d be very happy to win the Champions League with City and I really hope it’s on the cards.

“These are some of the reasons why it’s hard to win the Premier League and the Champion League.

“For the Premier League, consistency throughout a long period of time is required, though you have some margin to recover from a setback.

“The Champions League doesn’t offer that - and it’s even less forgiving in the knock-out stages, as the decisive factor for each round can come down to technicalities and the rub of the green.

“Our last experience against Tottenham is a testament to that.”

John Stones says the City squad owe it to their injured teammates to produce their very best performances.

With several players absent through injury – and Phil Foden suspended – much of the pre-match discussion has queried who will start for the Premier League Champions with Sunday’s crunch clash with Liverpool looming – but Stones asserts that whoever is picked, every member of the squad should be inspired by those who are out of contention.

“We’ve all got to step us as players and fight for our positions and our teammates,” he said.

“We need to play for the players who are injured. We need to keep working hard every day in training and setting the standard for everyone.

"That's what brought us success last season - how much we trained on  things, how much we pushed each other as teammates, fighting for positions.

"We have to take responsibility as individuals and as a team.”

Pep Guardiola 💬

“It’s a great week for us because we come to Italy and face Atalanta and then face Liverpool on Sunday.

“I want to qualify as soon as possible; I am not thinking about rotating. I go game by game.

“Try to win to be already there (in the last 16) one more year - that would be incredible.

“But if not, there is Shakhtar at home and Dinamo Zagreb away and we will see.

“Wednesday is the most important game. Try to play good, and after the next one.

“Before the first fixture there might have been a danger (of complacency), but they know, they have experienced exactly what it takes to come up against them.

“Now the players know what to expect. The first half was very even, up until 3-1.

“We’ve prepared as best we can, we know it is always tough to come away in Europe.

“Even so, there is still three quarters of the season to go after that.”
