Commentary By Rob Pollard

See you on Saturday...

All in all, a highly satisfactory start to our Asia Tour.

The win means we now tackle Wolves in Shanghai on Saturday in the Premier League Asia Tour final.

Thanks for your company today and be sure to join us then.

Pep (on Rodri and Angelino) 💬

"They played good. They make mistakes but that's normal.

"They make an incredible effort to play in these conditions - they wanna do it but they can't... when your legs can't move faster and you think slower.

"The most important thing is to improve and try to win the games."

(On whether he will play young players in the Final): "Yes!"

Pep on Leroy Sane 💬

"The club made him an offer for the past year.

"I have said many times that we want people to be happy here and we want to help him to reach his potential.

"He's a great player with incredible quality. I want people to want to stay here - the Club is there so the desire to have him is always there."

Pep (on the next captain) 💬

"We will choose the captain.

"We will wait until everyone is back (the Copa America guys and Riyad Mahrez) and they will choose their captain."

Pep Guardiola (on David Silva) 💬

"What should I say? He helps the guys and makes him proud.

"I know them and they will play and have themselves to play. So, they push each other and themselves and everyone tries.

"I’m not saying we are going to win but the desire to play in every game has happened past for the past three seasons.

"The weather conditions are not easy. It is not nice to play in these weather conditions and with short prep but it is what it is.

"We did really well and we were lucky to go up in the first half and to get the two in the second."

Kevin De Bruyne 💬

"We weren’t at the best level but we expected it. It;s been a tough couple of days - the travel wasn’t the best, the travel we did was not ideal. I think everybody did a good job and we need to work hard.

"I’m happy with the performance for the first game of the season. I’m maybe a little bit more tired than happy.

"That’s what we need - everybody knows the level to get to this team; the competition is high. We need that in the league.

"It’s going to be easier for me. When I played, I was happy with myself but I couldn’t reach the level I reached the year before.

"We’ve got four weeks until the first league game."

Final Countdown

So, City will face Wolves in the Premier League Asia Trophy Final on Saturday in Shanghai (12:30pm UK / 7:30pm local).

The Midlands outfit defeated Newcastle 4-0 earlier today, which means the Magpies will lock horns with West Ham in the Third Place Play-Off.

Start as you mean to go on...

A thumping win to kick-off our 2019/20 season, thanks to goals from David Silva, Lukas Nmecha and a brace from Raheem Sterling.

A dominant, assured display with a mix of youth and experience.

Very encouraging!

Bit of Oasis over the PA system here in Nanjing.

Other than the weather, the food, the mosquitoes and the timezone, it's just like being in Manchester.

Looks like a job well done for City. Our senior stars made a big difference in the second half.

Every single player will have received a fitness boost after this.

We can now start looking forward to Saturday's Premier League Asia Trophy final against Wolves.

Sane's cross is blocked for a corner.

The corner is taken, ball ends up with Gundogan, who crosses for Sane, but the winger turns the ball wide.

Sterling again causing havoc. Gets free of the defence and fires in a right-footed effort - saved by Roberto.

Seconds later the ball arrives at his feet again and this time he makes no mistake with a close-range finish.

Rodri doing exactly what Fernandinho does at times: dropping back in line with the centre-halves and adding an extra man back there when needed.

The game has lost its way somewhat. Lots of changes and the heat not helping.

However, from Pep's perspective this has been good. Fitness-wise his players will have come a long way, and he's had close look at some of his best young players.

SUPERB pass from Angelino splits open the West Ham defence and puts Sane in on goal. His shot is saved superbly and Sterling's effort on the rebound not hit with enough pace.

Good move, though.

Mixed first half

There were periods in that half where we looked laboured and disjointed. Understandable - it's a young side and it's our first preseason game played in difficult conditions.

But there were also moments of real quality and genuine encouragement.

Expect changes in the second half as Pep looks to protect his players from heat exhaustion!

First-half highlights from a City perspective. Physical test for all the players in difficult conditions. *That* pass from Bernabe. Silva's finish. We lead at HT. And the "NA, NA, NA, NA, NA, NA, NAAAAAAA CITYYYYYY" chant that rang out to my right.

Enjoying this.

Good play West Ham. Wilshere with a clever layoff to Noble, who bursts forward and slips in Antonio. Ball eventually lands at Lanzini's feet but his shot isn't good enough.

City escape.

Fredericks gets to the byline and crosses towards Antonio (a significant aerial presence) but Harwood-Bellis stands firm and heads clear.

Good defending.

The ball from Bernabe was sensational. Great finish too. And then minutes later City are 2-1 up.

We've been nowhere near the level we would want to be but we find ourselves ahead.

Both teams looking to move the ball around - but not at the pace we're used to. The heat appears to be inhibiting things.

A measured West Ham move ends with Lanzini shooting from the edge of the area but Bravo gathers comfortably.

Pep on life without Vincent Kompany

"A little bit!  But that’s life, no? He decided to start his career in management, but we are in touch regularly and his achievements at this football club will never be forgotten."

Pep on Rodri

"You will see.  He is a tall guy, which for a short team like we are is very good. Good for set-pieces, but that’s not why we bought him.

"He is young, a typical holding midfielder who is so quick in his thinking. We expect him to have a long career with our Club.

"Since we arrived, we tried to get players who are 21, 22, or 23 – he is in the national team and in Spain they call him the second Busquets, so I think we have a good player."

"For pre-season you need more than 20 players, but we work 10 v 10 many times – the players can’t play 90 minutes right now, so it’s better to play 30 or 45 minutes with high intensity and then rest for the next game."

"We want to win, but my main hope is that we don’t pick up injuries. We want to get back home, safe. That is what I want more than anything and the most important thing.

"If now we pick up one, two or three injuries those players will miss most of the preparations, so I just want them to be safe."

West Ham star man

It's a strong West Ham lineup but Felipe Anderson undoubtedly their dangerman.

He isn't always at the level he's capable of but when he is, he's the best player outside the top six sides in the Premier League for me.

Love watching him play.

Warm up time

Wolves players have literally not left the field of play and our boys are out for the warm up.

Quick turnaround between games!

Humidity levels: HIGH

I can confirm it is very warm and humid inside this stadium. It'll be a test of fitness as much as technical quality and tactics.

Big night

Lots of young players to have a look at this evening, but Harwood-Bellis and Doyle two I really like the look of.

Can't wait to see them on a stage like this.

Pep on Rodri

“He’s (Rodri) a young player who is going to be important for the next five or six years,” said Guardiola.

“The first 10 days have been really good, he will play his first game tomorrow.

“He and Angelino will play [against West Ham].”
