Signing off 👋

That's all from me tonight! It wasn't our best display, but our defence of the FA Cup continues as we progress to the quarter-final, where we'll face Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Up next, it's a big one. The Manchester derby at Old Trafford. Kick-off is at 16:30 (UK) on Sunday 8 March and you can join us for live updates from around 14:30 (UK).

Enjoy the rest of your week, Blues!

22:23

Pep talk

Guardiola:"It's important we are in the quarter-final. We want to be in the draw and we are. This is our fourth game away in a row and we have another one next Sunday at Old Trafford.

"We have spent a lot of mental energy in the last games. The players were absolutely ready. We didn’t conceded a shot on target. The second half was better than the first because we found more spaces. We are still alive."

22:04

Match stats 🔢

A pretty dominant display...

Possession: 🦉 20% - 80% 🔵

Shots: 🦉 1 - 20 🔵

On target: 🦉 0 - 9 🔵

Corners: 🦉 2 - 6 🔵

Fouls: 🦉 11 - 6 🔵

21:59

Michael Brown's thoughts...🧠

"City controlled the possession, they created many chances in the second period and there were some good saves from the goalkeeper, but City should have won it a bit more convincingly."

21:52

Riyad reacts

Mahrez: "It was tough. We knew it would be tough, but we made the job. Sometimes we have to take the win like this and we're happy to go through.

"There's still a long way to go, but we are trying to win every game. That's how we are as a team. We are going to try all the time to play good and win."

74'

Two chances in quick succession

Mahrez strikes one from distance - Wildsmith palms it away.

Seconds later: rinse and repeat!

One with his left, one with his right.

56'

Lovely football

Mahrez with quick feet inside the box, cuts inside and lets fly with his left. Just wide.

Positive play against from the Algerian.

HT

HT overview

Certainly not a great half from us but we have been the dominant side.

Wednesday have been super disciplined and hard working.

Need a goal to open the game up.

45'

Mahrez!!!!!

What a delivery from Mahrez! Superb ball to the back post and Stones should do better with his header, which bounces into the ground and goes over.

41'

We're ahead in the FA Youth Cup!

34'

Another chance goes begging

Mahrez whips a free-kick into the box. Dangerous delivery but it's headed over. Not sure whose head that came off.

16'

Game needs a goal

Could be a tough night, this. City the only team trying to play, but we expected that. Wednesday look very, very disciplined and determined to frustrate.

An early City goal would open the game up.

10'

No pain, no gain

Otamendi caught late by  Forestieri. Nothing too sinister but looked painful.

It'll take more than that to down The General.

19:37

Pep

“When we play bad, it’s a chance to play better in next game. Our emotional approach, our bravery, courage… that’s what I want to see.

“In terms of success or no success, there are some seasons where you don’t win titles but for the players and manager it’s an exceptional season for the fact of how you improved as a team.

“For the media and people, yes, we will be judged on how many titles and prizes we win and, of course, that’s important

“At the end of the season, I will give you my opinion on how our season was.

“Of course, trophies are amongst the most important (barometers) but as a manager, it’s not the only one.

“We can see how players were better than last season, that the way we played was better, how we reacted in bad moments.”

19:29

Cup stats

We have now won six consecutive English trophies and, looking further back, have won eight of the last nine since lifting the 2017/18 League Cup.

Sunday was our seventh League Cup triumph, which leaves us one behind record holders Liverpool, whilst we are the first team to win the competition three times in a row since the Merseyside outfit did so between 1981-84.

And, finally on the home front, this victory means we have progressed or won the final of our last 19 domestic cup ties.

19:19

Big night

It's a hugely significant match tonight.

We want to defend our trophy, and with the Premier League out of sight, the importance of winning this competition has increased.

This and the Champions League are surely now our priorities.

19:00

More of the same

We have won our last five FA Cup games against clubs from a lower division, scoring 22 goals in the process. Their last such defeat was the fifth-round loss to Wigan in 2018.

Pep [on mentality of his players]

"When they win a trophy, they go to take a shower and then they think about the next one.

"It's so nice what we have done in the last three years but [on Wednesday] we have another final. Away in the FA Cup is always difficult... but we can go through to the quarter-finals and that is what we have to do. We have to be focused on that."

18:30

Arsenal fixture ICYMI

Our rearranged game at home to Arsenal will take place on Wednesday 11 March.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm and Sky Sports will have full coverage.

The Gunners were originally scheduled to visit the Etihad last weekend, but our involvement in the Carabao Cup final saw the fixture moved.

In addition, as Chelsea progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, our Premier League fixture against them on Saturday 21 March has been postponed.

Fixture and ticket information will be released on ManCity.com in the coming days.

18:10

FA Cup draw

Don't forget, the draw for the QFs will be made immediately after our game this evening.

Let's hope we're involved.

If we are, we will be ball number 1.

1. Sheffield Wednesday or Manchester City

2. Sheffield United

3. Chelsea

4. Newcastle United

5. Leicester City or Birmingham City

6. Derby County or Manchester United

7. Tottenham Hotspur or Norwich City

8. Arsenal

There's also a huge FA Youth Cup game tonight at the Academy Stadium

18:05

Sheffield Wednesday team news

Connor Wickham and Josh Windass are both cup-tied.

Steven Fletcher was substituted at half-time against Derby as a precaution but he could be involved.

18:05

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk

"We're going to play against the champions of England and we know the quality they have right throughout, one of the best sides in Europe with one of the best managers over the past 15 years.

"We have to get everything right at a very high level with no mistakes."

17:48

Good evening

Hello! More cup action tonight - this time, the FA Cup!

Sunday's Carabao Cup success is just the boost we need ahead of the final few months.

Pep's focus will be on making sure we win both the FA Cup and Champions League, so tonight is a huge game.

Let's crack on with the coverage...

10:05

Double matchday ⚽

Also in action tonight are our Under-18s squad, who face Burnley in the FA Youth Cup at the Academy Stadium in a 7pm kick-off!

Hopefully, a good day all round...

09:56

Pep Guardiola 💬

“We are just thinking about Wednesday. I learnt (in my previous Clubs) when they win a trophy, they take a shower and then think about the next game.

“It's so nice what we have done in the Carabao Cup for the last few years.

“But the FA Cup is always difficult for the fact it's so important for the country for all the clubs in England

“We can go through to the quarter-finals and that is what we have to do, be focused on that.

“We cannot deny that Wednesday is an incredibly important game for us. It’s maybe easier to play in the Premier League.

“We need to be incredibly focused.”

09:52

Early team news 📋

Speaking in his pre-match press conference yesterday, Pep Guardiola confirmed Sergio Aguero is fit and available for selection.

Our all-time leading scorer was the subject of a late challenge towards the end of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final with Aston Villa and limped off six minutes from time with an ice pack around his leg.

But Guardiola asserted that Aguero had suffered no lasting effects.

However, the City manager added that although Leroy Sane made his welcome return to action after six months out through injury with our EDS in last Friday’s Premier League 2 win at Arsenal, the German winger will not be involved at Hillsborough.
