Good night Blues...πŸ’™

Right, that's me signing off after what I can only describe as a thoroughly good night's work by City.

Through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, no goals conceded, a brilliant Raheem Sterling brace, a first City goal for Ferran Torres and a sparkling debut by teenager Cole Palmer.

Add to that the return of Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva and, fingers crossed, no injuries, and you can't really ask for much more!

Thanks as always for your company this evening. It's been my pleasure.

And do join us again on Saturday for the small matter of our first Premier League game at Leeds United in 16 years.

What an occasion that will be! See you all then.

22:14

Wait for it...

Could be some tasty quarter-final ties!

Both Manchester United and Everton have booked their fifth round tickets tonight along with us and Newcastle who won earlier this evening with Liverpool to play Arsenal tomorrow in the last fourth round tie.

The draw will follow that match and we'll have the details as they happen.

Can't wait.

21:22

'I couldnt wait to play!'

More from Cole Palmer: "(My outstanding memory) was probably in the meeting before when he told me I was starting. I was just dead excited and couldn't wait to play."

21:20

'A dream come true'

Cole Palmer: "Obviously its a dream come true to be a the Club I’ve been at since the age of six. I just want to thank everyone at the club and all my friends and family for their support so far and I’m glad we’re in the next round."

21:08

Pep's salute for Nicolas Otamendi...

"Well, he was part of our incredible success and consistency is for Nico. He is an incredibly nice guy and especially the season we won the Premier League with 100 points, he was the key player for us.

"In the back four he was incredible. We thought we needed a young squad. He was more than 30. I wish him and his family all the best. My absolute gratitude for how he helped me from day one and his desire to improve.

"He will always be part of my best memories here in Manchester. "

21:05

Pep's praise for Cole Palmer

"He started a little bit shy, but that’s normal. He is an incredible young lad in the training sessions. Since two months ago he has showed us a lot of things. He has a good future in this club.

"He is a humble guy. He is a guy with incredible finishing, like Phil. He had his chance to score. His debut in this competition against a Premier League side, it will be good for his future.

"Again, thank you to the Academy for these players. We get players from the Academy’s work.

21:04

Pep on Ferran Torres...

"Yeah, good. He is a young player and still needs a little bit of time to understand what we want to do. He’s clever in the final third, with his passes. He doesn’t cross to cross, he passes the ball.

21:03

Pep's verdict...πŸ‘‡

"It was good. This competition is special for us. Two games, this one and Leeds before the international break. After our result ( against Leicester) it was important to win.

20:50

The four tops?

The fifth round draw will be held tomorrow and who would bet against us going on to make it four League Cup triumphs in a row on the evidence of tonight?

Very, very impressive that.

20:49

Full time

Job done.

Great night's work with Raheem Sterling scoring twice and Ferran Torres notching his first goal for the Club.

Fifth round ticket secured.

Not too shabby!!

88'

Time gentlemen please...

All about game management for City now as are cruising through the gears with two minutes left.

Been an ideal night's work for us - so many positives wherever you look.

80'

Sitting pretty...

If ever you can be comfortable in a football match this is the scenario.

3-0 up, 10 minutes left and City in command.

What's not to like.

72'

Aaarggh...

That hat-trick just won't come.

More unselfish work by Palmer as he weaves through on the right and beats his man and looks to find Sterling but the keeper just gets a hand to it.

71'

Almost four

The Burnley keeper denies Sterling a hat-trick and City a fourth after a wonderful ball from Mahrez split the Burnley defence.

Raz opened up his body but Peacock-Farrell gets down to deny him.

65'

Quite brilliant

Mahrez the architect with a wonderful through ball, Sterling allowed it to find Torres and the Spaniard cut inside and curled a tremendous shot home to register his first goal for the Club.

Ferran has been magnificent tonight and deserved that.

61'

Almost three...

City devastating in attack again.

De Bruyne finds Palmer on the right and the youngster cuts inside and unselfishly plays a square pass to Torres rather than going for goal but Burnley clear.

60'

Cool Cole

Lovely little dink and pass to De Bruyne from Palmer there in the centre of the pitch. The teenager has had a fine night's work so far.

57'

Focus time...πŸ‘€

No let up in intent from Burnley but City are in cruise control at the moment.

Just need to maintain focus and application with just over half an hour to go

54'

Time for change?

Plenty of exciting options on the bench. I wonder if the boss will opt to make some switches with Saturday's trip to Leeds in mind?

53'

So far, so good...

I did fancy us to respond in style tonight and so far we have been absolutely magnificent in our approach at a tough place to play.

49'

Double delight

Brilliant. Credit to Palmer who wins the ball back in centre field, finds De Bruyne who drives forward before feeding Torres.

The Spaniard cuts back to Raheem who takes a touch, steps inside and finishes with aplomb,

So clinical, so good to watch.

Just the start we wanted to the second half

HT

Elsewhere tonight...

Newcastle are through to the fifth round after a dramatic 5-4 win on penalties over Newport after the sides were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

HT

Forward march

No end of positives from that first 45 minutes.

Mentioned it earlier but I really do like the cut of Ferran Torres' jib!

Looks a real player.

Open
44'

Hit the post!!

Torres is denied by the woodwork as he latches onto an inswinging cross from Mahrez.

He stretches and reaches the ball with his left foot but it rattles off the post.

38'

Seconds out...

Steffen clears the second attempt from a Burnley free-kick and the Clarets then launch a spurious penalty claim after McNeill went tumbling in the box.

Quite rightly its given short shrift by referee Madley

35'

Deserved breakthrough

No one can say we don't deserve it and what a finish.

Mendy fizzes in another fine cross from the left wing and Sterling finishes with a superb volley to break the deadlock.

Just what we wanted. Get in!!!

30'

On the march

City break again at breakneck speed. Torres burns the gas from KDB's ball, then tries to find Sterling in the centre of the box but Tarkowski does enough to deny the England man

28'

Cole denied

So close again.

Palmer is almost there with a debut goal as he finds space on the right side of the goal from Mahrez's superb ball but Peacock- Farrell comes out to deny the youngster with his legs.

24'

Close!

Another stunning De Bruyne ball finds Torres who has switched wings with Mahrez.

The Spaniard though overcooks his chip cum shot and it sails over.

Big chance again

22'

Knocking on the door.

Palmer and De Bruyne combine to find Torres in space on the right. The Spaniard drives forward and he wins another City corner.

The setpiece though comes to nought.

21'

Warning note...

Burnley's time to attack. Matej Vydra finds half a yard of space cuts inside and fires a shot just wide from just inside the box.

A reminder that we cannot switch off for a second.

Open
20'

Almost...

That is brilliant from Peacock-Farrell to deny Sterling. Raz was through on goal after a rapid City counter and a sublime KDB pass fired in on goal but the Burnley keeper was equal to it.

All City at the moment

15'

Up and under...

A bit of a Garryowen (one for you rugby fans) from Zack Steffen there as he attempts to kick clear from outside his box.

He didn't quite get his timing right there as he rocketed skywards!

14'

Save..

Brilliant from Raheem Sterling as he wriggles free despite the attention of three Burnley defenders and drills in a low shot from a tight angle which Peacock-Farrell does well to keep out as he drives to his right.

11'

Aaarggh

So, so close.

De Bruyne teases the Clarets defence, he ghosts into the box, sees Rodri and the Spaniard drills in a low shot from 18 yards which whistles inches wide.

9'

Nearly...

A wonderful run by Riyad Mahrez on the edge of the box almost gets the Algerian in on goal as he leads the Burnley defence a merry dance.

Torres then puts a wonderful ball into the centre of the box but Sterling steers is wide.

However the flag was up for offside.

All City so far.

7'

Palmer seeing plenty of early touches and he wins the ball back really well from Tarkowski on the left flank.

Fluidity and intent by the bucketload so far from City

4'

Close!

Great sweeping move down the right flank, Torres gets behind the Burnley defence and his shot is deflected behind.

From the set piece Cole Palmer lets fly from 25 yards - its high and wide but no lack of confidence from the teenager.

2'

Up and at 'em πŸ‘Š

An early touch for Cole Palmer as he challenges Matt Lowton.

That should settle the nerves.

City already looking to take the game to Burnley

18:53

A final stat attack...πŸ“ˆ

City's Phil Foden has assisted in each of his last three League Cup starts - since the start of last season, no player has created more chances in open play in the competition than Foden (14), with the 20-year-old creating five in City's 2-1 win over Bournemouth in the third round.

18:50

Almost time...

Ten minutes and counting...

How we all feeling?

Must admit I'm normally the world's worst pessimist but I really like the look of the side tonight - let's bounce back in style lads.

18:44

Weather update...

It looks like the rain is abating at Turf Moor.

The surface will be slick and true but that's no bad thing with our squad!!

18:43

In it to win it!! πŸ†

And if anyone was in any doubt as to our collective desire and hunger for success, tonight's team tells you everything.

No half measures from the boss - as usual!

18:41

Wing command...

I must admit I am also looking forward to seeing Ferran Torres in action once more.

I get the feeling the young Spaniard will be a key figure for us and will only get better and better.

What an exciting prospect he is.

18:19

Flexible friend...

I've been lucky enough to see Cole in action for both our Under-18s and EDS over the past couple of years and he's another of our really exciting young talents.

Cole possesses bags of skill, is a wonderful dribbler with an eye for goal, he's also versatile and can operate both in midfield and further forward.

Can't wait to see how he goes this evening.

18:16

Stat attack (part two)...πŸ“ˆ

City have progressed from 28 of our last 30 League Cup ties, although our two eliminations in that time have both been at the fourth round stage - in 2014-15 vs Newcastle and 2016-17 vs Manchester United.

18:06

And here's how our hosts line up tonight...

18:03

A debut for teenager Cole Palmer, the welcome return of Aymeric Laporte at the heart of our defence, another outing for goalkeeper Zack Steffen and Bernardo back on the bench.

Positives aplenty all round I'd say!!

17:55

Wet, wet, wet...⚠️⚠️⚠️

If the weather here in South Manchester is anything to go by, the conditions in Lancashire could be challenging tonight.

We've had that much rain I swear I thought I saw someone go past our front window in a canoe!!

17:53

Stat attack...πŸ“ˆ

It's fair to say we boast a more than decent record against the Clarets.

City have lost just one of our last 24 matches against Burnley in all competitions (W17 D6), winning each of the last five by an aggregate score of 20-1.

Certainly makes for encouraging pre-match reading!!

17:45

Stateside star..🌭

Another debutant to impress last week was Zack Steffen.

I thought our American keeper was calm and assured in all his work against Bournemouth.

I wonder whether Zack will be afforded another opportunity this evening?

17:43

Cup of plenty! πŸ†

If there's one thing synonymous with this Club is that after a setback we look to come back all the stronger.

And don't forget our Carabao Cup record makes for seriously impressive reading.

We have won the trophy for the past three seasons and are unbeaten in the tournament for almost four years.

Not too shabby!!

17:41

Elsewhere tonight...

Plenty of their Carabao Cup action taking place this evening.

Newcastle have juts kicked off away at Newport while later on at 7.45pm Brighton host Manchester United while Everton entertain West Ham.

17:37

Encouraging omen?...πŸ“ˆ

Burnley and City have only met in the League Cup once before, with City winning 6-0 across two legs in the first round in 1999-2000.

Hope that augurs well for this evening!!

17:20

Selection thoughts ❓

With the games coming thick and fast and injuries still affecting us, it could be that the boss looks to make changes again tonight  especially with a tough Premier League trip to Leeds United on the horizon.

Could it be that we see another start for the likes of Liam Delap, Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood- Bellis?

We'll soon find out with team news due to land at 6pm.

17:06

Welcome Ruben!!!! πŸ‘Œ

Of course it has been a busy old week already here at City - not least with yesterday's fantastic news confirming our third signing of the season - Portuguese centre back Ruben Dias!!

17:01

Good evening Blues...πŸ’™

We're back in business again this evening just four days on from our home clash with Leicester City.

It's a chance to get back to winning ways with the focus tonight switching back to the Carabao Cup - a competition that, I think it's fair to say, we have come to enjoy having won the trophy for the past three seasons!

We make the short trip over to Lancashire to lock horns with Premier League rivals Burnley and we’ll get under way at Turf Moor at 19.00pm (UK).

I’ll be here to guide you through the pre-match build up, match action and post-match reaction right here in the Matchday Centre and you can get involved by sharing your thoughts on Twitter using #WNRH.

C'MON CITY! πŸ’ͺ
