Commentary By David Clayton

That's all for today....

Thanks everyone and hope you enjoyed our coverage - plenty more to come from the boss, Rodrigo and our highlights packages - see you all against PSG on Wednesday. Until then...

Pep reaction

On Sterling's display: "Definitely. He needed it and in the first half he was an important player going to the line and making passes. He scored a brilliant goal, with a great pass from Joao again."

On the performance of the team:  "Really good, very pleased. We knew, the last time we played against Rafael Benitez with Newcastle, we always struggled a lot. We won by a small margin. That's why it was so difficult. We knew they could play four or five at the back. That’s why it is important to move. Today we were better, we conceded few, we waited for the right moments. That’s why I am very pleased. The performance was really good."

Optimistic about winter schedule?  "We win today. We go to Wednesday and then after West Ham. We have a tough calendar. We are not top but we are not far away. On Wednesday we play a top team who are so special for the amount of quality they have. It will be a good game for us and after West Ham. We don't stop and after that we will see our level at the end of the season."

You'll be able to watch short highlights of today's game at 17:45 (GMT) on - and from midnight, extended highlights and a CITY+ Full Match Replay that you can watch 'as live' as they say

Rodri reaction

"I'm happy because was goal was a beauty! I'm very happy for Raheem as well, he showed what a top quality player he is and had trained so well.

"We could have had two penalties - Raheem's looked close and Bernardo got a kick on his leg I'm sure.

"We need to keep playing like this, play with confidence and hopefully we will have a great season."

Really impressive stuff from the champions. Considering we've just had an international break, this was as good as it gets. Should have had a couple more, maybe but nobody is complaining.

Full-time: City 3-0 Everton

Final whistle goes and City move back up to second in the table, three points behind Chelsea. Very good performance

McAtee shows some delightful skill - very much a twinkle toes moment as he toyed with the Everton defence and receives loud cheers and applause for his efforts which are finally foiled

Ilkay Gundogan drives forward, slips it to Palmer whose drive deflects nicely into Bernardo's path and he slips the ball under Pickford to wrap up victory. 3-0 City!!!!

Big chance missed!

Superb from Palmer as the threads Mahrez away on the right - his low cross finds Sterling with just Pickford to beat, but he is in two minds as the ball arrives and the keeper manages to scramble the danger away

That sums Bernardo up - harrying Gordon on the left of the City box and then when the ball is cleared, it is Bernardo who begins the counter attack. Tireless from the Portuguese

Oh my word that's a screamer - 25 yards out and it swerves powerfully into the top left corner. Superb strike from the Spaniard and City 2-0 up!!

Matchday Live verdicts so far

LESCOTT: Emotional week for Raheem, starting his foundation. He’s not received criticism because you can’t criticise him because of his contributions to the club.

Just returned with a warm drink - forgive me! The Goat was in the press room and he's impressed with that half of football and Foden in particular

Everton have been well-organised but losing Gray early on has lessened their threat on the break. City have played some great stuff and in Cancelo, we have a special talent who can unlock the doors with one moment of brilliance

Joao Cancelo flights a superb ball into the box and Sterling takes it first time, planting it to the right of Pickford to put the Blues 1-0 up. You beauty!!!

Close again!

Cole Palmer spins on the edge of the box and sends a low drive towards the bottom left corner - Pickford pushes it out but Sterling can't profit and sees his low shot easily gathered

Demarai Gray made a short pass and immediately looked uncomfortable. He got the ball returned to him and then sat down holding his groin - he's now going off. He'd started very well, too

Gray bursts down the left and is stopped on the edge of the box by Rodrigo as the visitors start brightly -  City counter and Sterling wins a free-kick on the right of the Everton box

Few words from Pep ahead of the game...

"In the Premier League, anything can happen. I have a lot of respect for Everton and the manager and players they have.

"We know Cole well and he will not be judged on one game - he just has to be himself up front in the small spaces and with his finishing. His desire, too - young players always bring you something special and he wants to take the world.

"It was a long time ago - we were preparing for the Champions League final and they were safe and thinking about their holidays."

Nicky Weaver is a guest at City Square so the 1999 play-off final is getting a rerun on the big screen - never tire of seeing the conclusion to that game, do you?

And their thoughts on Cole Palmer...

Joleon Lescott:  "He’s a very talented player, I’m pleased for him. The technical ability he has is scary. He just has a natural balance that players seem to be born with. He can create moments of magic out of nothing. Hopefully the emotions don’t get the better of him and affect his performance.

"For England he plays wide on the right of a front three, he’s scored goals there. He’s also played as a false 9 for City so he can play there, too."

Richard Dunne: "It’s all part of the learning progress, like we saw with Foden, it doesn’t happen overnight. When this match is over he’s not the finished article. Everton are really organised so it will be tough for him but the glimpses we’ve seen from his is exciting so looking forward to seeing him play."

Matchday Live

Some thoughts from our studio guests....

Richard Dunne: "I wish Everton well but most of my career was here at City so my loyalties lie here!"

Joleon Lescott:  "Everton are  roughly where I expect them to be. This is a dangerous game because Rafa's style suits playing someone like City, as they can counter."

Looks like Everton have taken their full allocation of around 3,000 so should be a great atmosphere.  Only 25 minutes till kick-off and looking forward to the game getting underway. Plus it's generally warmer when everyone is seated!

Bernardo is well wrapped up with his snood... it's a big day for James McAtee as well as Cole Palmer - if he comes on, it will be his Premier League debut

Gary Neville is getting mobbed to my left for selfies from youngsters and I've just stopped to say hello to Nedum Onuoha who is commentating today for BBC Radio 5 Live. A class act.

So Cole Palmer gets the nod - his  first Premier League start - Phil Foden has recovered as Pep makes three changes from the side that beat United ahead of the international break

Team news

Here's our starting XI for today: Ederson, Walker, Cancelo, Stones, Laporte, Rodrigo, Palmer, Gundogan (c), Foden, Bernardo, Sterling

Toffees team news

Some Everton team news for today -  Mason Holgate begins a three-match ban while Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tom Davies are still injured.

The influential Yerry Mina, out for the past seven weeks, could return today.

Rafa Benitez has frustrated City before with his tactics, mostly at Newcastle and will no doubt aim to play a similar way this afternoon, so we may have to be patient

We've had some good battles with the Toffees over the years and, if I may use a cliché, 'they're never easy games'... though, having said that,  last season's home fixture ended up a 5-0 win .

So looking ahead to the game and City know victory is vital with Chelsea and Liverpool both winning yesterday. Everton haven't travelled that well so far - one win from five games on the road, two draws and two losses.

Matchday Live will be kicking off at 1pm with Joleon Lescott and Richard Dunne today's studio guests - earlier this week we asked them for their combined City and Everton XIs - here's what the came up with...

We'll have team news for you at 1pm and it will be interesting to see whether our injury doubts have recovered in time for today's game. Of course. Kevin De Bruyne is definitely out after testing positive to Covid - get well soon, Kevin - while Phil Foden and Jack Grealish were rated doubtful by Pep at his Friday press conference.
