Commentary By

Bye for now!

That's all for today's Matchday Centre. We'll be back on Sunday 2 October for the Manchester derby.

Look out for two-minute highlights of the Wolves game, available on and the official Man City app at 17:15 (UK).

Extended highlights will follow at midnight, as well as a full 90-minute replay for CITY+ subscribers.

And join us tomorrow for coverage of lour WSL game at Villa.

Great weekend so far...

Our U18s came back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 at Liverpool.

And Pep's boys did the business at Wolves.

Our EDS are in action now - 0-0 at HT - and our Women's team play Villa tomorrow as the new WSL season begins.

Decent start.

HALF TIME | Manchester City EDS 0 - 0 Fulham U21s

Brian Barry-Murphy's side have had much of the ball but have failed to break Fulham's defence so far.

More from Pep

"Fingers crossed the players come back fit [from international duty].

"I understand how important it is ahead of World Cup selection.

"Hopefully they come back fit for the derby."

Guardiola reaction

"The game started really well for us, and then we scored a second and a red card.

"To come here against this team, with the quality they have - Neto, Moutinho, Neves - they have the quality to transition so fast.

"It was an incredible victory. We struggled a lot - big compliment for Wolves.

"It was so important before the international break."

More from Grealish

"It’s nice [to get Pep praise].

"He’s been great with me, I should thank him because he gave me the chance to play today after my performance on Wednesday, which wasn’t the best."

Grealish reaction

"Rightly so [I’ve been getting criticised]. I should be scoring more and getting more assists.

"All I can do now is score and get assists.

"I will always have people talking about me because of the mount I got bought for. But if you look throughout my career, I haven't scored loads.

"It’s something I want to add to my game and hopefully with this team and in front of these fans I can."

Grealish reaction

"I enjoyed that. My goal was a long time coming.

"My last goal was against West Ham at the backend of last season.

"And we got a great result against a top team. Wolves don’t get the credit they deserve."

A fine win against a very decent side.

A fast start set the tone - and a 3-0 win is the perfect way to head into the international break.

Grealish, Haaland and Foden with the goals.

Update from journalist David Clayton at Molineux

"Hard to think of a better way to head into the international break than this - a 3-0 win (as things stand), a clean sheet and we will go top for 24 hours or so at least.

"Happy days..."

Majestic defending from Neves

Neves, who has slotted in at centre-back after Collins' red card, makes a fantastic last-ditch challenge to whip the ball away from Haaland, who looked likely to score.

Classy Cole

Lovely play from Palmer down the City left. He plays a beautifully-weighted pass to Mahrez on the edge of the area, but his volley is blocked.

Another change

City now moving the ball expertly again. Some great pass-and-move football.

Another sub sees Grealish come off for Palmer.

Update from journalist David Clayton at Molineux

"You'd think that was game, set and match - we needed it too as Wolves were building up a head of steam and a goal back would have made it tricky.

"Lovely finish from Phil Foden and the 70th-minute applause for Her Majesty the Queen that followed was observed by all four corners of the ground."

70-minute applause

The crowd stand in unison to applaud on 70 minutes - a mark of respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who spent 70 years on the throne.

A goal of real beauty

Superb goal.

Haaland and De Bruyne play a brilliant one-two. De Bruyne crosses for Foden, whose flicked first-time finish is wonderful.

Movement, ingenuity and technique. City are some team!

No corner?

Haaland's scuffed effort is saved by Ederson - and Foden's effort is blocked for a corner...

...but the corner isn't given.

Very strange.

Ruben Dias with a fine sliding block to ensure Nunes' cross doesn't end in a goal. A very quick VAR check confirms the ball did not touch his arm, despite string calls from the Wolves fans.

Big chance for Wolves

Very good chance goes begging for Wolves.

It's Gonçalo Guedes who fluffs his lines after fine play from Ait-Nouri down the left.

Wolves have been the better side in this second half.

Grealish 🔥

Just seen Jack Grealish absolutely skin two Wolves defenders.

Love him in full flight.

It was actually a fine move from City and De Bruyne should perhaps have taken a shot. It ends with Foden unable to bring the ball down inside the area and the chance goes astray.

Update from journalist David Clayton at Molineux

"Wolves are giving it a go here and not just focusing on damage limitation - we've not looked as dangerous since the hosts went down to 10 men, so Pep will be watching this closely as not over yet."

Good quality on show

Decent start to the second half from 10-man Wolves, who are clearly looking to stabilise in these early stages.

They move the ball really well but City have just had too much pace and power for them so far today.

A very impressive half from City.

Other than a couple of half chances for Wolves, City have controlled the game.

Grealish and Haaland have both scored and we lead 2-0.

Collins has been sent off for Wolves for a reckless challenge on Grealish. City are known for making teams run hard, so Wolves will struggle in the second half with 10 men.

Front foot

Grealish skips inside past a challenge and squares the ball to De Bruyne, whose effort is blocked and goes for a corner.

The Belgian's corner is then cleared at the near post by Nunes.

Chance for Wolves

Decent effort from Podence.

Neves plays a fine pass to release him. He takes a touch and fires an effort towards the near post - and he's not far off target.

Update from journalist David Clayton at Molineux

"Dangerous challenge by Collins and it looked bad the moment it happened.

"Jack seems to be OK and though he is the innocent party, he is the villain in the eyes of the home support who have been booing him throughout because of his Villa connections."

FULL TIME | Liverpool U18s 3 - 4 City U18s

Meanwhile, our U18s have come from 3-1 down to beat Liverpool 4-3 away from home.

What a result that is.

Collins off

Collins receives a straight red card for his high, reckless challenge on Grealish.

A dangerous foul and the right decision.

What a stat

Kevin De Bruyne (4 goals, 1 assists) has been directly involved in more Premier League goals at Molineux in 2022 than any other player (including Wolves players).

Over the bar

Decent passing move involving Foden and De Bruyne ends with Grealish curling the ball over the bar.

Jack looks confident today.

Shot from distance

Rodri with a powerful effort from distance - but Sa saves comfortably.

Too close to the keeper but another decent opening.

Update from journalist David Clayton at Molineux

"Wolves giving us so much space and they are paying for it.

"Erling Haaland - what can you say? He's incredible and there could be more for him today because we look in the mood for goals."

City revving now.

A sustained period of pressure in and around the Wolves box sees both Cancelo and Foden have efforts blocked.

Backs to the wall defending from Wolves.

Haaland picked the ball up 22 yards out and headed straight for goal.

The Wolves defenders backed off him and gave him room. He picked his corner and placed the ball expertly into the back of the net.

Yellow card for Rodri

Rodri booked for pulling back a Wolves player.

Moutinho hits the resulting free-kick straight into the City wall.

Update from journalist David Clayton at Molineux

"Wow, what a start!

"We couldn't have begun the game much better and another assist for Kevin De Bruyne - he likes this stadium, doesn't he?

"City fans going nuts opposite where I'm sat!"

Fast start!

More danger from City.

Foden's dangerous ball across the box is hacked clear - and from the resulting corner, Dias has the ball in the net but the it doesn't count because of a foul on Jose Sa, who had the ball in both hands.

Breathless start.

Superb start for City

Foden makes the pitch wide on the right-hand side and plays in De Bruyne on the overlap.

He crosses from the right - a perfect delivery across the face of the six-yard box - and Grealish is there to apply the finish.

Reminder of the teams

Starting XI: Sa, Jonny, Collins, Kilman, Ait-Nouri, Neves (C), Nunes, Moutinho, Guedes, Neto, Podence

Subs: Sarkic, Traore, Hwang, Mosquera, Semedo, Toti, Ronan, Bueno, Campbell

Starting XI: Ederson, Stones, Dias, Akanji, Cancelo, Rodrigo, De Bruyne (C), Bernardo, Grealish, Foden, Haaland

Subs: Ortega Moreno, Carson, Walker, Ake, Gundogan, Alvarez, Gomez, Mahrez, Palmer

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

A minute's silence impeccably observed at Molineux.

A real mark of respect laid down before kick off.

Now time for the national anthem.

Update from journalist David Clayton at Molineux

"We'll have the national anthem shortly and the lady who practiced to the empty stadium and hour or so ago was excellent.

"One minute silence coming up and bot sets of fans on their feet already."

15 minutes to go

Not long now until kick off.

It's an attacking City lineup, with both Foden and Bernardo, who had such a significant impact from the bench on Wednesday, both starting.

Should be a great game.

Wolves boss Bruno Lage

"It was good to have time to prepare ourselves. I think this game comes at a good time.

"Diego [Costa] is not involved - he is not ready to compete at this level yet."

Dickov on Cancelo

"He scores goals, he creates - but he always seems to be back defensively, too.

"He has to be one of the best full-backs in the world."

Update from journalist David Clayton at Molineux

"The sun is beaming down here at Molineux but it's nippy up here in the press box.

"Last time I was here was during the pandemic and the noise was all being made by our bench and backroom staff.

"Wolverhampton Wanderers are a very warm, friendly football club and always have been.

"Wolves don't score too many and we have a very attacking line-up so will be interesting to see how this pans out."

HT in our U18s game

HALF TIME | Liverpool U18s 2 - 1 Manchester City U18s

Disappointment for Ben Wilkinson's side after scoring first as we head into the break with work to do.

Akanji's pre-match thoughts

Manuel Akanji has settled very well. He seems very happy ahead of today's game...

"The guys have made it easy for me to settle. They are all kind. Same with the coaching staff. I feel really comfortable here.

"The quality is a lot higher. So I am trying to get better every day."

Pep on Wolves

“It is a completely different team to the previous seasons.

“They used to play five at the back with Conor Coady, now they play with four.

“I am really impressed with how they play. Their position in the table is because football is unpredictable and sometimes you don't get what you deserve.

“They have a lot of good things, like central defenders making a good process; they have incredible runners and a lot of talent.

“They are huge competitors with the Portuguese mentality they have.

“(They are) one of the toughest teams we have faced in recent seasons and we have to be prepared because they had all week to prepare for this game.”

Pep [on why his full-backs step inside]

"I am a manager who wants to see my team pass the ball.

"When the distance between the players is shorter, it is easier to pass."

Dickov on Wolves

"It’ll be tough today. Wolves struggle scoring goals but they are well organised and have great technical players. But it’s nothing we aren’t used to playing against.”

Dickov on KDB

"He's the best midfielder in the world and has been for years. I was at Wolves last year and his performance was one of the best I've ever seen in the Premier League.

"Molineux can be intimidating - the Wolves fans applauded him off the pitch!"

Wolves team news

Starting XI: Sa, Jonny, Collins, Kilman, Ait-Nouri, Neves (C), Nunes, Moutinho, Guedes, Neto, Podence

Subs: Sarkic, Traore, Hwang, Mosquera, Semedo, Toti, Ronan, Bueno, Campbell

City team news

Starting XI: Ederson, Stones, Dias, Akanji, Cancelo, Rodrigo, De Bruyne (C), Bernardo, Grealish, Foden, Haaland

Subs: Ortega Moreno, Carson, Walker, Ake, Gundogan, Alvarez, Gomez, Mahrez, Palmer

Reminder of team news

Kyle Walker and Aymeric Laporte remain doubts for City, while Diego Costa could make his Wolves.

Raul Jimenez remains out with a groin issue, while fellow forward Sasa Kalajdzic suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the recent win over Southampton.

Boubacar Traore could make his Wolves bow.

Against no side has Kevin De Bruyne scored more Premier League goals than he has against Wolves (5), with four of those strikes coming in a 5-1 win in this exact fixture last season.

Can he do it?

Erling Haaland has scored in all three of his Premier League away games – no player has ever scored in their first four appearances on the road in the competition.

Tide turned

After losing both league meetings with Wolves in 2019-20, we have won each of our last four against them by an aggregate score of 13-3.

Guardiola on Julian Alvarez

“All the headlines are for Erling, and I understand that because of his numbers - but I said in the pre-season in the States that this guy is really good.

“He can play wider with his vision from outside and he can increase our intensity.

“It doesn't matter if he doesn't score goals, he always has chance to score it.

“In the training sessions we see how clinical he is and how fast, and clever he is in those moments.

“We are so happy for him.”

Jack Grealish

“What got me the move here was playing on the left-wing.

“There were times last season where I played as a false nine, I played as a number eight sometimes where Bernardo, Gundo[gan] and Kev [De Bruyne] play.

“I like that position as well and I played there in the past for Villa. I think if you play in that position at City then you see a lot of the ball so I would say the left-wing or a number eight [is his preferred position].

“The attacking players such as me, Erling [Haaland], Phil [Foden], Julian [Alvarez] and Riyad [Mahrez], I think we can all play in different positions."

U18s team news
