Commentary By George Kelsey

Ciao! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

That's all from me, I hope you enjoyed our comprehensive victory in Florence as much as I did!

๐Ÿ—ฃ To tweak the lyrics of a famous Italian song:

"When your team's playing great

And you're in the last eight

That's amore"

...I'll get my coat

The teams in tomorrow's draw ๐Ÿ‘‡

Chelsea ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ
Lyon ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท
Wolfsburg ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช
Barcelona ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ
Bayern Munich ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช
Rosengard ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช
Manchester City ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ
Sparta Prague ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฟ /  Paris SG ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท

Looking ahead ๐Ÿ”ฎ

The draw for both the quarter-final and the semi-finals of the Champions League will take place tomorrow from 11am.

Rest assured we'll bring you all the latest news as soon as the draw is made on

Gareth Taylor the Champions League frontrunners ๐Ÿ’ฌ

"There are some big teams left in and some that or progressing well with the score-lines and in their domestic leagues.

"I have a saying, names never win games, it's about the work you do in training and when you go out there.

"A lot of it will be to do with performance and getting the rub of the green. That can have a big effect as well.

"All we can do is control the controllables. Then it is in the lap of the gods a bit."

Gareth Taylor on Millie Davies' Champions League debut ๐Ÿ’ฌ

"We see her as an attacking midfielder. She has the quality to play on the inside.

"She is still learning the game, she is young.

"But she has a great work ethic and a willingness to learn and when you have that you have a chance. She has areas to improve like all the girls. It is a nice reward for how she has done recently.

"It is really pleasing to see.

Gareth Taylor ๐Ÿ’ฌ

"That was the word I used after with the goals: professional. We played with humility. The way we managed the game from the first to the last minute was excellent.

"We have spoken about how we execute our game plan and I thought the way we managed the game was great. We scored some good goals and all the players contributed.

"We wanted to get to this point as a minimum because we haven't been here for a while, so it's a pat on the back for the players, but we want more.

"The players are keen to progress. We want to be in the latter stages. Today is done, we move onto the next round and we come back to the basic principles we work to in order to guarantee a performance."

Caroline Weir ๐Ÿ’ฌ

"Itโ€™s another good win. Itโ€™s never easy to come away in the Champions League so to score 5 goals is huge positive. Again, it gives us more confidence heading into the next game.

"The team was rotated so it just shows the depth in our squad at the moment, everyoneโ€™s playing well and it gives us confidence heading into next week.

"Itโ€™s getting to the tougher rounds, weโ€™ve come away with a good win today and we know itโ€™ll be tough, but itโ€™s where we want to be, at the start of the season these are the games we want to be in. We are expecting a tough draw but weโ€™re looking forward to it.

What a performance!

Doubles from Ellen White and substitute Sam Mewis, plus a Caroline Weir penalty, are enough to see City sweep into the last eight of the Champions League ๐Ÿ†

A commanding, clinical display from Gareth Taylor's side!

Going for 6โƒฃ

Sam Mewis could've had a second half hat-trick!

Rose Lavelle races into space and tees up her fellow American, but the Fiorentina defender does just enough to take the sting off her effort on goal.

Five to play, including stoppage time...

Five star City โญ

Georgia Stanway finds Chloe Kelly on the right, who teases a delightful ball into the path of Sam Mewis inside the box.

The American makes no mistake, smashing home her second and City's fifth of the game.

What. A. Performance.

Pressing for #4

Some more incredible footwork from Rose Lavelle eventually sets up Chloe Kelly, who pulls the trigger on the edge of the box.

But the winger's effort is too high to trouble the net.

No let up from Gareth Taylor's side, as expected.

Tactical rethink ๐Ÿค”

Since Ellen White has come off, it looks like Georgia Stanway will now lead the line.

She shows typical tenacity to chase down a ball into the channel, which eventually leads to a corner on the left.

From the set-piece she volleys on goal, but it may well clear the Alps rather than threaten the Fiorentina goal...

City subs ๐Ÿ”

Ellen White makes way for Millie Davies for her Champions League debut, while Keira Walsh is brought off for Laura Coombs.

American Beauty ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Sam Mewis picks up play in the centre, drives into space and drills a low effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

That's six in her last seven City appearances now!

Knocking on the door ๐Ÿšช

Chloe Kelly teases a ball into the far post, and Beckie is inches away from getting on the end of it.

Another strong start from Gareth Taylor's side!

So close yet so far โš–

Great movement from Janine Beckie on the right sees her racing in on goal.

Unfortunately a heavy touch lets her down, and Schroffenegger is there to mop up the danger.

Twinkle toes ๐Ÿ’™

Rose Lavelle's dynamism is causing Fiorentina all kinds of problems.

The American dances her way through a couple of challenges in the midfield before popping the ball off with ease, La Viola can't contain her at the moment!

City change ๐Ÿ”

Gareth Taylor makes a double substitution at the break, with Chloe Kelly and Sam Mewis coming on for Lauren Hemp and Caroline Weir.

Denice is delighted by what she's seen so far!

I used to have a biscuit as an after school treat, but this is much better! ๏ธโšฝ๏ธ

Half-Time โŒš

Just what the doctor ordered.

A blistering first half display from City, who go in three goals to the good thanks to an Ellen White brace and Caroline Weir penalty.

Gareth Taylor will be delighted with that performance, and will call for the same again after the break. ๐Ÿ‘

The hosts almost grab a goal back through Sara Baldi.

The forward picks up the cross from the right inside the area and prods a low effort towards goal that flashes just wide of Taieb's far post.

A warning shot from Fiorentina...

Warning for Walsh ๐Ÿ˜ก

I think that one goes down as a 'good foul'...

Keira Walsh is given a warning after hauling Daniela Sabatino to the ground to prevent a counter attack from the hosts.

Half-time approaching...

Caroline Oatway in Florence ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

"Another dream start for City. As was the case in the first leg, we came flying out of the box and with a goal inside the opening ten minutes, any nerves were calmed. Two more goals plant out feet firmly into the next round.

"We're playing some lovely stuff with the 'front five' as Gareth Taylor calls it combining really well. Keira Walsh also unlocking the hosts' defence with her incredible vision and passing ability, while Rose Lavelle is looking sharp. Could this be the start of something special for her in sky blue?

"Fiorentina have had a few chances on the break but we've dealt well with their threats, although Gareth and his coaching staff must have earache with Antonio Cincotta's constant bellowing! I can hear it all the way from the press box!"

Three of a kind

She forced a great save from the Fiorentina goalkeeper moments ago, but Ellen White won't be denied a second time!

The striker is in the right place at the right time to tap home Lauren Hemp's centre.

What a first half - get in, City ๐Ÿ˜

Whiteing in the wings

Ellen White goes close once again, making a darting run into the near post which is expertly picked out by Rose Lavelle.

Her half-volley is well saved once again by the Fiorentina stopper and scrabble player's dream that is Schroffenegger.

Wonder Weir ๐ŸŽ†

It wouldn't be a Caroline Weir performance if she didn't go for the spectacular, right?

The midfielder looks to whip one into the far corner from the edge of the box, but the effort flashes just wide.

Moments later, she tees up Lauren Hemp as the winger races in from the left, but her effort is well saved.

Chances aplenty

It's an onslaught on the hosts' goal at the moment, with Janine Beckie's looping cross swatted away by Katja Schroffenegger.

A professional display so far from Gareth Taylor's side ๐Ÿ‘

Relentless ๐Ÿ˜…

City aren't letting up after picking up their second, with some intricate, one-touch play on show.

If they lose the ball, the high press immediately strangles Fiorentina and forces them into risky long balls.

Meanwhile, Keira Walsh sends Janine Beckie through on the right, but the Canadian is flagged offside.

Cool as you like, Caroline Weir makes it two from the spot.

The 'keeper guessed right, but the midfielder's powerful drive was too far into the bottom corner to be stopped.

Two goals up, five ahead on aggregate - keep it up, City ๐Ÿ™Œ

Esme Morgan rises highest at the back post from a corner, and her header is judged to have hit the hand of Nicolo Zanoli.

Caroline Weir steps up...

No extra time โŒ

For any pessimists out there, Ellen's goal means extra time is now not possible.

Elsewhere Fiorentina's first foray into the City half sees Lana Clelland sting the palms of Karima Taieb, who smothers the danger at the second time of asking.

The breakthrough comes just before the ten-minute mark, and it's our captain who gets it!

Lovely link play between Ellen White and Lauren Hemp on the edge of the box, and the forward coolly slots home inside the box.

La Viola boss Antonio Cincotta gestures for calm from his players as City continue to knock on the door early on.

Janine Beckie reacts quickest to Ellen White's deflected effort, but her first-time strike hits a crowd of bodies.

All City so far...

Rose rising to the occasion

Great to see Rose Lavelle at her dynamic best.

She explodes into space and wins a free-kick on the edge of the box.

This looks like Alex Greenwood territory...

Bright start

City begin in typically quick fashion, zipping the ball around nicely inside the Fiorentina half.

The Italians are sitting in two strong banks of four and will look to catch Gareth Taylor's side on the counter.

Kick-off ๏ธโšฝ๏ธ

Here we go...

Gareth Taylor's side are 90 minutes away from a spot in the Champions League last eight.

Ellen White gets the game underway!

Tensions rising...

The players are out and ready to go with the Champions League theme ringing in their ears.

City captain Ellen White and La Viola skipper Greta Adami swap pennants and gee up their teams one last time!

Cup complications ๐Ÿ†

The beauty of two-legged cup competitions is all the different permutations that come if the teams canโ€™t be separated on aggregate.

Because of our first-leg victory, City would have to lose 3-0 for the game in Florence to go to extra time.

If needed, a penalty shootout would then be used to separate the two sides.

However, if we find the back of the net, then the tie is guaranteed to be decided inside the 90 minutes because Fiorentina did NOT score at the Academy Stadium.

Got it? Yeah, me tooโ€ฆ just about!

Form Guide ๐Ÿ“‹

City return to European action in superb form, having won each of our last nine FA Women's Super League matches - the latest a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday.

We secured our passage through to the last 16 of the UEFA Womenโ€™s Champions League thanks to a 5-1 aggregate victory over Goteborg FC in the round of 32 in December.

Fiorentina eliminated Slavia Praha 3-2 on aggregate in the Round of 32, thanks to Daniele Sabatino's late strike.

In the Womenโ€™s Serie A, the Italian outfit had been on an impressive run of form and - unbeaten in the league during 2021 - before succumbing to successive defeats to Florentia and Sassulo either side of our Champions League first leg clash.

Lauren Hemp's loving every moment of our European adventure

โ€œI would love to win the Champions League โ€“ itโ€™s something Iโ€™d definitely love to tick off the list!โ€

โ€œI could do it this year and see how many times I could do it!

โ€œItโ€™s great to be out there. I havenโ€™t had many opportunities โ€“ I didnโ€™t get to go to Goteborg โ€“ but itโ€™s nice to get those opportunities to go away. Iโ€™m lucky enough to play for a Club pushing for the Champions League.

โ€œWe know weโ€™ve got the team to do it and weโ€™re looking forward to showing what we can do.

โ€œItโ€™s important not to be complacent. Weโ€™re 3-0 up but weโ€™ll still stick to the gameplan. Weโ€™ve been focusing on stuff over the last week to prepare us for this game.

โ€œHopefully, we get the result we want.โ€

Pretty in Purple

Ever wondered why Fiorentina play in their distinctive purple and are nicknamed โ€˜La Violaโ€™?

Legend has it they used to play in red and white, before something blue was accidentally put in the washing machine with the kits, which turned them purple.

Instead of buying some new shirts, they decided to adopt the new colour.

Something to impress your mates with on your next Zoom catch-up!

Gareth Taylor: We need to be alive to Fiorentina threat

โ€œWe need to be aware [that they have to go for it]. Sometimes, when you have nothing to lose, teams can come out and be braver.

โ€œThe last three teams weโ€™ve played in all competitions have been difficult to break down with a low block. It could come that way and be a case of damage limitation but they could also come out and really go for it. We need to be alive and aware of that, and Iโ€™m sure we will be.

โ€œItโ€™s deemed a good scoreline to have in the first leg โ€“ home or away โ€“ which is great, and itโ€™s really exciting to be able to travel to Florence. Weโ€™re very fortunate for that to happen and weโ€™re looking forward to the game.

โ€œThese games are extra special and the players would agree. Itโ€™s a different format, more tactical and more thought goes in, in between games in terms of whatโ€™s required.โ€

Five changes

Gareth Taylor makes five changes from the side that edged out Everton at the weekend in the WSL, with Karima Taieb starting between the sticks in Florence.

She will be shielded by a back four of Georgia Stanway, Abby Dahlkemper, Esme Morgan and Alex Greenwood.

In the midfield three, Keira Walsh sitting in the holding role allows Rose Lavelle and Caroline Weir to get forward and support our attacking trident, which include Janine Beckie and Lauren Hemp on the flanks, providing width for captain Ellen White.

Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze both miss out on todayโ€™s matchday squad as a precaution.

Despite the changes that looks like a very strong team, and just shows the strength in depth we have in the squad.

C'mon, City!
